Pottery fascinates me because it is a tension that can never be fully resolved.

Every piece begins as a lump of wet earth. Through intention, pressure, and patience, it slowly becomes something more. Yet clay has a memory. It records every touch, every hesitation, every correction, and every mistake. No matter how much skill is gained, I can never completely outrun myself. In the finished work, my ability and my fallibility occupy the same space.

Perhaps that is part of why pottery feels meaningful to me. The process echoes an ancient story of creation—of life being formed from dirt and given purpose. I shape the clay, but unlike its perfect Creator, I am imperfect. As a result, every piece bears the marks of both intention and limitation.

I am especially drawn to methods that leave room for surprise. Fire, ash, reduction, atmosphere, and chance all participate in the final outcome. No matter how carefully I plan, there is always an element of discovery waiting at the end of the firing. The techniques with the greatest potential for unpredictability are often the ones I love most.
What emerges from the kiln is never exactly what I imagined. Sometimes it is better. Sometimes it is stranger. But it is always honest.
